The name
The name is the rule set. A lesson built in one tool can be assigned in an LMS that follows the same rules. The lesson is the content object. The zip is how it is shared.
The package
A SCORM file is that zip. Open it and you find the manifest, the page the LMS launches, and the files that page needs.
- imsmanifest.xml
- Names every file, the SCORM version, and the page the LMS opens first.
- A launch page
- HTML. This is the page the LMS opens.
- The assets
- What that page plays. For a video lesson, the video and the captions.
Leap's manifest says schemaversion 1.2. The zip holds a small player, video.mp4, captions.vtt and quiz checkpoints. The captions are English (srclang=en).
SCORM 1.2 and 2004
SCORM 2004 reports completion and pass/fail separately and adds sequencing. SCORM 1.2 reports one status. Leap exports SCORM 1.2.
The LMS
Teams use a SCORM package so a training lesson plays inside the LMS, and the LMS keeps the result. You upload the zip. The LMS reads imsmanifest.xml, opens the launch page, and stores what the lesson reports.
With quizzes, Leap's package scores out of 100 and a pass is 80. With no quizzes, it reports completed.
SCORM or MP4
An MP4 is the video. Someone can watch it, and the file holds no score. A SCORM package wraps the lesson so the LMS can launch it and keep a result. If people only need to watch, the MP4 is enough. If the LMS has to record a score, or that they finished, export the package.
Check a package
Drop the zip on the free SCORM checker. It checks a SCORM 1.2 or 2004 zip for the manifest, the version, the launch page and every file the manifest lists. Then it plays the package and logs each call.
Leap
You approve the source document. Leap makes a training video from it and checks the numbers and quotes in it against your document. Paid plans export SCORM 1.2, the MP4 and the captions. Videos run up to about 5 minutes.
From an SOP, the steps are in Turn an SOP into a training video.
Questions
- What does SCORM stand for?
- Sharable Content Object Reference Model. The rules let a lesson move from the tool that made it into an LMS, as a zip.
- What is a SCORM package?
- A zip an LMS can launch. Inside are imsmanifest.xml, a launch page and the assets that page needs. That zip is the SCORM file.
- What is SCORM 1.2 vs 2004?
- SCORM 2004 reports completion and pass/fail separately and adds sequencing. SCORM 1.2 reports one status. Leap exports SCORM 1.2.
- Does Leap export SCORM?
- Yes. SCORM 1.2. The manifest says schemaversion 1.2. The zip holds a small player, video.mp4, English captions (captions.vtt, srclang=en) and quiz checkpoints. With quizzes, the score is out of 100 and a pass is 80. With no quizzes, the package reports completed.
- Can I validate a SCORM zip online?
- Yes. Drop it on the free checker at /free-tools/scorm. It reads a SCORM 1.2 or 2004 zip in the browser: the manifest, the version, the launch page and the listed files, then plays it.
- Do I need SCORM or is MP4 enough?
- Use the MP4 when people only need to watch the video. Use the SCORM package when the LMS has to record a score or that they finished.
